About 30 minutes north of Agadir, Imi Ouaddar stretches along the bottom of a wide, sheltered bay, surrounded by ochre-colored hills and facing the Atlantic. This small coastal village remains unassuming, far from the hustle and bustle of Taghazout, and charms visitors with its peaceful atmosphere and unspoiled natural setting. It’s a particularly popular spot for beginners looking to ease into surfing.
Imi Ouaddar’s beach is wide, sandy, and shallow for the first few meters, making it an ideal spot to learn to ride the waves without stress. The waves roll in gradually, often longer and less powerful than at more exposed spots, allowing beginners to gain confidence quickly. Intermediate surfers, meanwhile, can take advantage of cleaner sections to improve their balance, trajectory, and timing.
The experience begins with a welcome on the beach and a look out at the ocean. The instructors explain how to read the waves, identify currents, and choose your starting spot. After a light warm-up, it’s time for the technical basics: stance on the board, efficient paddling, balance, and your first attempts at standing up in the whitewater. You’ll learn step by step, with constant guidance in the water.
In Imi Ouaddar, surfing takes on a contemplative dimension. Between sessions in the water, you can admire the surrounding cliffs, listen to the surf, and watch local fishermen walking along the beach. The pace is calm, conducive to concentration and letting go. After the session, many choose to extend the morning with a tagine or grilled fish facing the ocean, or simply to stay on the sand to enjoy the sun and the sea air.
This introductory session is as much a sporting activity as it is a moment of connection with nature and local life.
